Asbestos inventory employer

In Belgium, an asbestos certificate has been mandatory for employers since 1995. The asbestos inventory was required primarily to protect workers (in accordance with the Codex on Well-being at Work, book VI, title 3 (replaces the RD March 16, 2006).

The asbestos certificate also requires employers to draw up a management program after the asbestos inventory has been drawn up. In this way, they can do everything they can to minimize exposure to asbestos fibers for employees.

For individuals who want to sell their home older than 2001, an asbestos certificate is mandatory as of November 2022 (see article Asbestos certificate sale of home for more info)

For owners who want to renovate/ demolish their home or building, an asbestos certificate is also mandatory in certain cases (see article Asbestos inventory renovation or construction project)

Currently, it is not mandatory to have an asbestos inventory drawn up by an ovam asbestos expert and, as an employer, you can draw it up yourself.

It is currently not mandatory to hire an ovam asbestos expert for the preparation of an asbestos inventory within the framework of the Codex on Well-being at Work. As an employer, you may therefore also draw up an asbestos inventory yourself.
