The Flemish government has developed an asbestos abatement action plan because their goal is to make all homes asbestos safe by 2040. Because asbestos safety is very important, the government wants to map the asbestos in buildings older than 2001 through an asbestos abatement policy. The main thing is to inventory and remove asbestos where possible. More information on the asbestos inventory can be found in the article Asbestos certificate sale of home.
The action plan developed to ensure asbestos safety was approved on July 20, 2018 by the Flemish government.
In this plan, the following action points were listed:
- By 2034, all asbestos cement applications in the vicinity of buildings must be removed and all simple, non-adhesive asbestos applications must be removed
- By 2040, all asbestos applications that are in poor condition must be removed.
This is to ensure maximum asbestos safety.
For buildings that are accessible to the public, there are already rules imposed in legislation, but for private individuals there is currently no legislation. The Flemish government does try to encourage everyone to guarantee asbestos safety by encouraging people to have as much asbestos as possible removed from their property.
