Is it mandatory to remove asbestos?

Currently, abest removal from a home or building is not mandatory under asbestos removal legislation. It is only mandatory according to the asbestos removal legislation when asbestos is exposed by renovation works. Nevertheless, asbestos removal legislation recommends that asbestos be removed if you want to preserve the value of your home. Read more about it on our "Asbestos Safety" page.

Currently, it is not mandatory to have an asbestos removal certificate drawn up after asbestos removal. However, an asbestos inventory can be drawn up which, for example, shows whether or not asbestos is still present in a building. This blank asbestos inventory can then possibly be regarded as an asbestos removal certificate. Read more about this on our page "Asbestos certificate for sale of house".

If you are renovating and you find asbestos, it is prohibited to cover it again. The only thing that is allowed is to temporarily encapsulate asbestos to avoid exposure in anticipation of its permanent removal. If you have any doubts, it is important to look into the asbestos removal legislation, as it describes how asbestos can be safely removed. There are many asbestos-containing materials that are not in good condition and exposure to them can be dangerous as it can spread asbestos fibers that are harmful.
