Legislation on asbestos roofs

An asbestos roof is something that is very common as at the time people used asbestos cement to make corrugated iron and slates.

Currently, there is no specific asbestos roofing legislation, but since it is so common, the general asbestos legislation also applies to roofs containing asbestos. In the asbestos abatement policy, a kind of legislation asbestos roofs is provided since, according to the Flemish government, by 2034 all asbestos cement roofs must be removed. This is because there is a high risk of asbestos fibers being released from outdated asbestos slates/corrugated sheets. Moreover, it is also prohibited to install solar panels on an asbestos roof. So it is definitely a good idea to start thinking about renewing your roof if it is no longer in the best condition.

According to the legislation on asbestos roofs, you can choose whether you replace your roof yourself or have a contractor do it for you. How you can do this safely can be read on the site of the OVAM: https://ovam.vlaanderen.be/asbestdaken-en-gevels
