Save on your energy bill with a few small measures!

Now that there is unfortunately no political agreement to reduce energy bills, we went looking for easy tricks to save a lot on a yearly basis. We found a few tips on the Livios website.

1. Seal gaps with sealant and draft strips. This keeps cold air out.

2. Insulate your pipes with a foam cover. In this way, much less heat is lost between the starting point (boiler, water heater...) and the end point (radiators, bath tap...). You save around EUR 2 per metre per year, while a metre of foam rubber costs barely EUR 1 to 2 and in principle never needs replacing. A smart investment, therefore.

3. Turn the heating down a degree. It will cost you nothing, but you will quickly save 7% on your energy bill. Keeping the radiators free of heat increases your savings because less energy is needed to heat the room. Another tip: closing the doors costs nothing, but prevents the heat from escaping.

4. Install radiator foil behind the radiators so that no heat is lost through the outside wall at the back of the radiators. It will cost you 5 euros, but this small investment will pay itself back many times over on a yearly basis. Bleeding the radiators also ensures optimal use. You will quickly save a handful of euros every year.

5. Think about standby consumption. Some 10% of our energy bill consists of standby consumption. A television decoder that is left on, mobile phone chargers that are stuck in the wall socket or the computer that is running all day without being used result in a higher energy bill.

6. Go for LED bulbs. Per light bulb that you replace with a LED bulb, you save 10 euros per year. They are more expensive to buy but have a much longer life. A LED lamp lasts 20 to 50 years, with an average use of 3 hours per day.

7. Install a solar shower head. You will use less water and less energy to heat the water. A water-saving shower head uses half as much water as a traditional shower head. If you know that hot water for sanitary facilities accounts for approximately 20% of your gas bill, the bill is quickly made up.
